Strength, belonging & motion for all

Echo Motion is an adaptive gym where every body belongs. We specialize in functional training for people with developmental and other disabilities, so athletes can build strength, coordination and confidence that carry into everyday life.

Every session looks different. The goal stays the same: meet each athlete where they’re at, and make movement something they feel proud of.

For kids, teens and adults of all abilities

Athletes ages 10 and up train at Echo Motion, including people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, physical disabilities, and sensory or communication needs. Athletes can train on their own or with a support person.

Kids

Fun, game-based sessions that build coordination, body awareness and confidence.

  • Motor skills through movement games and play
  • Practice following directions, taking turns and teamwork
  • After-school and summer sessions that fit family schedules

Teens

Real strength training and real friendships, in a gym where teens fit in from day one.

  • Barbell, kettlebell and sled work, coached safely
  • Small groups with teamwork and friendly competition
  • Habits and independence that carry into adulthood

Adults

Functional strength for daily life, from any starting point, with or without a support person.

  • Strength, balance, endurance and mobility
  • Skills for everyday independence
  • Small group classes that become a community

Melissa Schaffer

After 20 years of teaching special education, I decided to take my passion for movement and inclusion to a whole new level.

Melissa opened Echo Motion Fitness in Pasadena in 2025, in what she calls “an empty space and a big dream.” Today it’s a gym full of athletes, coaches and families who show up for each other.

Help more athletes move

Our non-profit program closes funding gaps so more people with disabilities can train, and creates jobs for our community.

Questions families frequently ask

How do I get started?

Call or text (626) 344-8562, or fill out the contact form on our website. We’ll set up a free consultation to learn about your athlete and answer your questions.

Is there a free first session, and what happens at it?

Your first consultation is free. This includes a 30-minute observation, where your coach gets to know the athlete, sees how they move and talks through their needs. Then we recommend the best program for them. No pressure, no commitment.

Can a parent, caregiver or aide come along, and is one required?

Yes, parents and caregivers are welcome to stay. We just ask that you let our coaches lead the session. A caregiver or support staff is required only if your athlete needs one-on-one help with personal care or behavior.

Can I share needs, triggers and communication preferences ahead of time?

Please do! The more we know, the better we can support your athlete from day one. Tell us about:

  • communication preferences

  • sensory needs and triggers

  • calming strategies

What should I bring?

Bring comfortable clothes, close-toed shoes (required), water, and any braces, mobility aids or communication devices your athlete uses.
